What to expect from Wii U

There's been a lot of debate lately about Nintendo's upcoming new console, the Wii U. From what I've seen it seems many people are not very impressed with this console. I'll admit, Nintendo's E3 press conference could have been better, but their Nintendo Direct video before E3 was very good, I thought. I have always had confidence in Nintendo and I believe this new console will work well.

I don't often play many hardcore games and that was a common issue with the Wii. It wasn't very capable of the more highly rated games. I however like the game Nintendo have to offer. Lets be honest, who doesn't like a bit of Mario or Zelda. The Wii U should be able to play these games, and many more popular franchises, well.

The Controller
The main feature of the console is the controller (now called the Wii U Gamepad), which features a 6.2inch touchscreen. The gamepad is supplied with a stylus but fingers can also be used on the screen. One of the main points for this screen is the fact that games can be played on the controller if someone else is watching the television, as long as the console is turned on. This is quite useful as I have had times when I have been unable to play on a console if there is someone using the TV. The other idea for this secondary screen is to create the concept of asymmetric gameplay. This idea is that the person with the Wii U Gamepad has a different view to those playing on the TV. Such a feature will be shown well in Nintendoland, a new game coming out on release. This contains various minigames that feature asymmetric gameplay. It even has a camera on the front for various in-game features and more. There are two joysticks, directional buttons, A,B,X,Y,L,R,ZL and ZR buttons. Plus the usual home, start and select buttons. NFC technology will be ustilised in some way as well but I have no idea how yet.

For those who don't want to use the screen all the time there is a pro controller. It look a lot like a Xbox controller but more symmetrical. And for those who say it is a copy, lets be honest, Nintendo invented most of the features of modern controllers and the other companies copy them all the time anyway. You can even use the old Wii Remotes with this console.

The Console
No major features about the actual console have been released yet. In fact, many people still were not aware that there was going to be a new console. I must admit that's not great because even when it was shown at E3 last year I noticed the new console in the background of the videos. It's not the most creative change as it really just look like the current console with rounded sides. One of thee main complaints people have been saying is that it will not be like the 'next gen' stuff. All I can say is  that it is Nintendo's next generation of console, therefore it surely counts as a next gen console. The only reason many people aren't calling it next gen is because it doesn't have the better graphics. I'm going to say now that if you play games just for graphics your definitely don't enjoy them. You remember games for gameplay, not graphics.

Miiverse
Nintendo have even announced a new sort of social network for games. It will be on the console and will apparently have apps for PC and smartphones. It appears to be a system whereby people can post their feelings about certain games and help each other out. This seems to me to be a great concept, it reduces the need for frequent help from friends who can sometimes be difficult to contact. Coupled with the ability to video call people this could prove to be very helpful.

Overview
Well I think this will turn out to be a great console. It's got many great new features, not yet present on current consoles. Plus if the rumours are correct, it should be powerful enough to handle most games. Hopefully it will give Nintendo a better view amongst most of the gaming community. With buttons designed for core games and features for other games, it should work well for all. I just hope the price is acceptable and that I can get one on launch.

There are also going to be some great looking games out when this launches. Examples are ZombiU, Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3 and Nintendoland.
